Amalia Barla de Figueredo

Amalia Barla was born in San Fernando in the Department of Maldonado, Uruguay, on February 11 (she never wanted anyone to know the year, but was fond of referring to her sign as Aquarius). She worked as a primary school teacher for a quarter of a century, and shared 39 years of her life in marriage to Álvaro Figueredo, the love of her life.

In 1957, her first poetry collection appeared: Te apagarás como las lámparas (ed. Estuario, Montevideo) [You’ll burn out like the lamps], during which she wrote intensely, travelled to Canada, and grieved her husband’s death. Cruce de escrituras [Crossroads of writings] appeared in 1988 (Pan de Azúcar, Maldonado [Uruguay]: Comisión de Cultura de Pan de Azúcar), almost a decade before her passing in the home she had shared for so many years with Álvaro Figueredo in Pan de Azúcar. The flowers of her garden pressed in books and sent in so many letters to her children and grandchildren across the years, remain in testament to her beauty, poetic spirit and love.
